To be honest, the REAL breakfast of champions is this chicken/brown rice soup my mom used to make me growing up (more on that later), but this lovely morning shake will do just fine.
Also in the spirit of honesty, I don’t actually own a blender! While moving house, my husband (let’s call him Mr Kitchen) discovered that we own at least four different blending devices. Despite my attempts to explain the difference between an immersion blender, an ice cream maker, a blender, and a food processor, he insisted that I get rid of something. (And to think I had almost bought a NutriBullet over the weekend!)
So the blender went out the window, which, to be honest, was probably good since the darn thing didn’t work without making a horrible burning rubber smell. That left the food processor (hello, Cuisinart MiniPrep!) to do most of the heavy lifting. Again, in the name of honesty, it actually hasn’t been that bad. If you don’t mind a little extra stirring to make sure things combine evenly, the processor has been doing a pretty good job. It’s also less of a hassle to clean.
Anyhoo, on to the shake already! This is DELICIOUS, healthy and takes about a minute to make if you have a blender, and 5 minutes and lots of pulsing if you have a food processor. Either way, you won’t be sorry.
Notes to self:
– If using food processor:
– Process dates first, then add remaining ingredients and only HALF the milk. Once partially blended, add remaining half of milk.
– Put a towel on top of the food processor when processing to make sure that milk does not leak out of the sides and make a big mess.
Breakfast of Champions
2 dates, pitted
1 frozen banana, sliced
Handful of pumpkin seeds
Handful of raw walnut halves
Shake of nutmeg
Shake of cinnamon
1 cup of milk (or more to taste)
Put everything in the blender and whiz. Enjoy!
